Research Themes

Content

The subject of the symposium is based on the first of the centre’s five research themes, but to enhance the transdisciplinary synergy the organizers of the symposium will invite speakers and papers within research theme 2 as well. The main objective of this combination of the themes 1 and 2 is to acquire greater insights into the relationships between Natural Resource Management in Latin America and the social and political context. The symposium will focus on the following questions: to what extent is environmental degradation embedded in global and local transformations, and in local systems of knowledge and knowledge transfer? How can an interdisciplinary approach to NRM generate new insights into the relationships between the quality of the ecosystems and the social and cultural context? How can an interdisciplinary approach to NRM provide comprehensive and sustainable solutions to land degradation and other environmental problems in Latin America? What types of citizenship, rights and entitlements emerge as part of contemporary processes of change? What is the role of civil society, social movements and local NGOs in the processes of democratization in Latin America?
