The Canary Islands in the Early Modern Period: Atlantic Crossroads.
This talk offers a critical survey of key texts in the cultural and literary history of the Canary Islands from the 15th to the 17th centuries, which ultimately reveal the Atlantic world as a complex space of relational interactions at the crossroads of Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa. The Canary archipelago has been understood as an experimental laboratory of European colonialism on its routes of expansion into the Americas, but it is also a textual space of cultural and ideological negotiation on the journey back from the New World.
